Going Wobbly

A headline in a Washington Post online update today says it all:

U.S. Pursues Compromise on U.N. Iraq Resolution

And with whom are we pusuing this "compromise"? Why, it's the Vichy folks who compromised with Hitler, and let the Nazis swallow half of their nation. What is somewhat confusing about this latest initiative from our cookiepushers at State is this (from the story): If France rebuffs the latest American offer, Washington is preparing to distribute its new resolution to the council's five veto-bearing members as early as tomorrow in an effort to build support for the initiative from the rest of the council, according to sources.

Confusing, as France is one of those five veto-bearing members, so if they've already "rebuffed" the resolution, have they not in effect announced their intent to veto it? Of course, as we know, the French are nothing if not inconstant. Why are we now following down this path?

Be that as it may, it is way past time for this sort of dillydallying. Let us simply take the Iraqis at their mid-September 2002 "word" (promptly reneged by end of September 2002) that there will be inspections without condition. If not, then, bombs away...
