Vote for Saddam, he's your man, if he can't do it, no one can...
This story is typical of the indepth coverage that one may find in the New York Times, although this particular story was somewhat lacking in the by now expected editorializing on the front page.
The story is clear in its portrayal of a country under the thumb of a brutal dictator, holding a sham election. This particular vignette is quite telling, insofar as it is from an interview with an ethnic Kurd named Ahmed:
"This is nothing to do with President Bush." he [Ahmed] said. "It's up to the Iraqi people to decide who should rule them. And all of the Iraqi people are supporting our president because he is a man of justice, and because he gives the Iraqi people everything they need."
As for Mr. Bush's assertion that Iraqis live in fear, he added: "Who are Americans to lecture us about fear? Didn't I hear on the radio this morning that there is a sniper wandering around in Washington, D.C., killing people at random? Is that what Americans call living without fear?"
Well, there is a slight difference. In the DC sniper case, it is the government trying its best to protect the people; in Iraq it is their government that they need protection from. And, let's not put too fine a point on it, the sniper has killed fewer than 10 (one is too many; this critter needs to be stopped and pronto). Saddam, of course, has killed thousands and thousands of his countrymen and women. As for an ethnic Kurd defending Saddam, this is passing strange, considering that it is the Kurds who were the victim of Saddam's use of poison gas. One must assume that some of Saddam's ubiquitous "minders" were about. What a crappy excuse for a nation, to need such a thing as minders to keep their population in tow.
