human values trump culture
This pithy statement is from an insightful article on our nuclear pandering to those pesky imps in North Korea. The article, by Victor Davis Hanson, appears in National Review Online. Mr. Hanson takes our last two Democratic presidents, Jimmy the Moralizer, and Bubba the Corrupter of Interns, to task for their failures with regards the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
This is a heady stew of the failure of feelings over hard truths on the ground, and the ultimate bankruptcy of multiculturalism as a driving force in international affairs. The essence is that democratic, liberal (as in post-Enlightenment) states "by their very nature deserve more of an absolute privilege not accorded to dictators and tyrants — always".
Our deference to Japan and South Korean, who both want to jaw-jaw with the world's few remaining Stalinist gulags is a natural outgrowth of multiculturalism taking the place of critical thought. Naturally, these two democracies, strong culturally and economically, weak militarily, don't wish to be incinerated by the North Korean madman, This is no more surprising than the Jordanians siding with Saddam in Gulf War I -- fear that if they did not, they would become the next target for aggression. And, not to be too glib, it is easy for us, relatively safe in America (until the North Koreans develop missiles that can reach our shores), to not put our Northeast Asian allies in harm's way. But, history is a harsh taskmaster -- pay now, or pay much more later.
