Written on Water: Required reading
Mark Helprin has written a brilliant piece of unsurpassed clarity about our so-called war on terror. It appeared September 16, 2002, on the editorial page of the Wall Street Journal, and is available online here.
It takes President Bush to task, and this is a hard pill to swallow. But truth, like water, will find its own level, and Mr. Helprin's truth is unmistakable. The key points, lifted verbatim from the editorial:
You cannot lead a nation in war unless you are willing to put the nation on a war footing.
You cannot lead a nation in war if you dare not recognize the enemy.
You cannot lead a nation in war unless you are willing to strike the enemy at his heart.
The principal enemy, as others, sadly few in number, have recognised, is Saudi Arabia. To call them our friends is a gross perversion of the truth. And, as Mr. Helprin notes in conclusion about the Saudis, "What relationship with them, exactly, do we wish to preserve?"
