War Plan Is a Huge Mistake, screams the above-the-fold headline, attributed to Kanzler Gerhard Schröder. The "war plan" in question is the elimination of a cancer (Saddam's Iraq) before it can metastasize. Of course, Germans have significant experience on the receiving end of appeasement...
This is a front page nuisance; euros should be on the interior pages at best. In fairness, this is actually a good in-depth but slanted Times piece. Read the interview transcript; you'll quickly get a real sense of just how wobbly our european "allies" are. Herr Kanzler comes across as a nice guy, but patronizing towards those in the Bush administration and its supporters who value clarity above sophistication.
Oh, by the way, Hr Schroeder feels our pain, since, in his words, "And I also experienced it much closer to home — if I may be permitted to say so — since my wife had once lived not far away, on the Upper West Side..."
