Moderates in Iran
Just when we thought Iran might be getting soft on us, a juicy quotation from their nut-case-in-charge, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This is from a disturbing but not surprising story that alleges Iranian responsibility for the killing of 85 people at a Buenos Aires Jewish community center in 1994.
"After the bombing, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who succeeded Ayatollah Khomeini as Iran's supreme leader and still holds that post, publicly expressed his approval.
'By gathering together groups of Jews with records of murder, theft, wickedness and hooliganism from throughout the world,' Ayatollah Khamenei said, 'the Zionist regime has created an entity under the name of the Israeli nation that only understands the logic of terror and crimes'."
This boy's turban is wrapped too tight. Nonetheless, regardless of Islamofascist quotables, one should never take the allegations of a defector at face value without some verification. According to the Times' story, verification appears to be proceeding apace. Sadly, there is much to the defector's story that has the bitter ring of truth. It surely does appear that the Argentine lounge-lizard look alike ex-prez Menem has some tall explaining to do.
Just for the record here, your humble blogger has been to Argentina and found the people charming but for the most part clueless about how to actually do anything that we might call worthwhile. They have pissed away in a century what, at the start of the 20th century, was to have been the numero uno economic powerhouse of the entire Western Hemisphere, including the United States.
